On a recent trip visiting my daughter in San Diego, (lucky girl is going to college there!), I visited lovely Coronado Island several times. As it sits across the San Diego harbor, it’s only a few minute drive from downtown San Diego. She showed me some of her favorite Coronado places and discovered a local diner that’s a must stop when hungry! If you’re visiting San Diego, it’s definitely worth a visit and it’s also a perfect beach vacation on its own.
1. Dine at Clayton’s
You definitely want to grab a meal here! It’s open from breakfast through dinner, is a casual diner atmosphere, and is a favorite of locals and tourists… so expect a wait. My daughter recommends the banana bread french toast and I fell in love with their pot roast (which is high praise, as my Grandmother set the bar high on this meal!) 😉
2. Watch the Sunset
Watching the sunset is not to be missed on the West Coast! My husband and I walked the beach outside The Del for a couple hours before sunset and suggest you do the same! We enjoyed watching the surfers, witnessed a wedding, spied a seal playing in the surf, and found sand dollars as the tide came in. You’re sure to enjoy this magical hour on Coronado Island as everyone gathers on the beach to witness the end to the day!
3. Stay or Visit “The Del”
During my visit to Coronado, I toured the hotel and grounds of the iconic Hotel Del Coronado. With its red roofs and Victorian style you won’t want to miss seeing or staying at this Coronado landmark. It’s the ideal location on the beach near downtown. If you’re in search of a luxurious, laid back retreat – look no further! Many visitors never leave the resort with its many amenities, but it’s also within walking distance to main street (great shopping and restaurants) if you want to venture out. If you’re staying in San Diego and only visiting Coronado Island for the day – it’s the perfect seaside spot to grab lunch or enjoy a drink.
