Last year on my trip to Hawaii – I explored Upcountry Maui for a few days…and discovered it’s one of my favorite areas on the island! This region sits at higher elevations surrounding Mt. Haleakala.
1. Enjoy Lower Temps
Upcountry is a great place if you need a break from the heat at the beach and want to rinse the sand off! At 3000-4000 feet you’ll notice a few degrees less temperature during the day and cooler evenings. Pack a light sweater or jacket – or enjoy a dip in the hot tub!
2. Take in the Views
From Upcountry you’ll be spoiled with the spectacular vistas! I couldn’t get enough of the rolling hills, farms and sweeping ocean views. One of the best parts of this visit was watching the killer sunsets from the pool where we stayed. Another great spot to watch the sunset is from the top of Haleakala. If the clouds are hanging out at the peak, drive down the mountain a bit and watch from one of the turn outs.

3. Avoid the Crowds
In this new age of social distancing Upcountry is a terrific area for this. It’s much less crowded than the more popular tourist hotspots of Lahaina and Kaanapali. The places to stay tend to be smaller hotels and local bed and breakfasts.
4. Discover Hawaiian Towns
I stayed near Makawao and it’s a super cute town to browse their shops and lunch outside with the chickens at the Garden Cafe! I also suggest a visit to Maui Wine in Kula. Sample their unique pineapple blend as you stroll their history filled grounds.

5. Where to Stay
During our trip my husband and I stayed at the Northshore Lookout (click here to read my review of this boutique property).
Even if you aren’t staying in Upcountry – I highly recommend a day trip to this special area in Maui! It’s fun to explore on your own and discover your personal favorites! 🙂
Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
