Packing for your trip to Alaska requires a little more planning than throwing your swimsuits in a suitcase for a beach vacation! Even though summer is the main tourist and traveling season in Alaska, I’ve learned after several trips there that you need to prepare for all kinds of weather. The weather is unpredictable in Alaska – don’t expect sunshine your entire trip. 😉 Taking layers of clothing is my best advice to be prepared for your adventures in Alaska. Also keep in mind it’s an outdoorsy, casual environment.
Rain Gear
Make sure to pack an umbrella and outer shell/jacket that’s waterproof (preferably with a hood). Most fishing, biking, kayaking or other outdoor tours will outfit you with the extra gear you need, but be sure to check those details before your trip.
Clothing
Short/long sleeve shirts, a fleece layer and jeans are the staples I recommend. You may want one pair of shorts along in case of a warm day! Pack hiking or trail shoes for your daily wear – you’ll be happy for the extra traction during your exploring! Throw winter gloves and a warm hat in your suitcase – it can get chilly viewing glaciers! Don’t forget to pack a hat for the sun as well.
If you’re cruising for your Alaska trip – you’ll notice the ship attire is a little more casual in the evenings than some other cruises. Depending on the cruise line and dining you choose, I’ll help guide in you with your evening dress packing. You’ll also want a swim suit for those soaks in the ship’s hot tubs.
Accessories
A small pair of binoculars is handy to have with you during your Alaska travels. It’s easier to spot wildlife from the car, train or ship! Besides your luggage, I suggest you take a small backpack with you for your day trips, hikes or tours from the ship. You’ll need a place to keep water bottles, snacks, extra clothing and whatever other personal items you’ll want with you.
Camera Equipment
If there’s one trip that you’ll want to have more than your phone camera along – it’s this one! With the beautiful scenery and abundance of wildlife it’s nice to have a camera with a bigger lens and for better quality printing of those photos. Pack your selfie stick and Go-Pro to get some action video of your fishing, kayaking or dog sledding adventures!
