After spending 2 glorious weeks on Crete – my mind is still on all the Greek salads! One of the largest, southern islands in the Mediterranean Sea – it’s easily accessible via the ferry system and 2 airports. With a diverse landscape and Mediterranean climate – I believe it’s a an up and coming destination for Americans!
Greek Food
Home of the original Mediterranean diet and most olive oil production in Greece – Cretan food is a feast (and healthy one) for the taste buds!
From the local tavernas to room service to hotel breakfasts – all the food we ate on Crete was fresh, local, and home made. A shout out to the Greek ladies for their home cooking at the Menta Hotel in Rethymno. Each morning it was such a treat to be greeted by these women! They took the time to explain to us each dish they made from scratch and one of my favorite memories from this trip! 🙂
Welcoming People
Crete is home to some of the most friendly people I’ve ever met while traveling! While on Crete for 2 weeks – my husband and I visited numerous places on the island… and even being the end of their busy tourist season – we were always made to feel welcome. Even though English is very widely spoken by the locals on Crete – I still think it’s important to learn a few Greek words to show interest in their culture and language.
World Class Beaches
With 650 miles of coastline – Crete is known for its numerous sandy beaches! They have over 100 blue flag beaches… earned with their environmental practices, safety, and clean water. The crystal clear water surrounding Crete is some of the most beautiful shades of blue water I’ve seen! I highly recommend a trip to the famous Elafonissi Beach with its pink tinted sand.
Mountainous Landscape
Living in Colorado for the majority of my life – the mountainous terrain is one of my favorite things about Crete. The White Mountains dot the western part of the island and the peaks are also covered in snow during the winter months. My husband and I enjoyed driving in the in the higher altitudes visiting the local villages and it’s also a gorgeous drive through the mountains to visit Elafonissi Beach. Be sure to allow time to stop at some of the stands along the way to pick up Cretan honey!
Bang for the Buck
Crete is popular island for Europeans to holiday on, but for now it’s not quite as well known a vacation spot for Americans. Hotel and restaurant prices are considerably lower than the smaller, popular islands of Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros. With a ferry ride connection – Crete and Santorini are a great combination for a trip to the Greek Islands!
After spending 2 weeks on Crete in early September – I think this is the perfect time to visit. The summer crowds thin out, but the summer weather sticks around! Also – keep in mind, many hotels and restaurants in the tourist areas of Greece close from fall until Easter. Hope this inspires you to consider a trip to Crete!
Until the next adventure – bon voyage
