How to Spend a Day in Cheyenne

My husband and I love a good day trip! On a windy fall day last November – we headed north to check out the capitol of Wyoming. Spending the day in Cheyenne exceeded our expectations! If you find yourself at the crossroads of I-80 and I-25; park your car downtown to check out this little city – with the big western vibe.

1. Downtown Highlights

If you happen to be visiting on a Saturday – don’t miss their farmer’s market in the Cheyenne Depot (or Frontier Park during the summer months). They had so many enticing local products! While you’re wandering in Cheyenne’s downtown – keep a look out for the 8′ Big Boots throughout town. You can even do a scavenger hunt to find them all.

2. Alleys/Murals

Cheyenne is full of fantastic murals and artwork! Make sure to stroll the alleys and streets in the downtown area – as you’ll discover numerous works of art. Many have a western flair or showcase Cheyenne’s interesting history as a frontier town.

3. Capitol Building

It doesn’t feel right to be in a state capitol and not see their Capitol Building! Get your steps in and walk the blocks from downtown Cheyene to check it out. The “Cowboy State” has one of my favorite state flags – it proudly flies portraying a bison.

4. Lunch at Sanfords Pub & Grub

A friend referred us here for lunch and he didn’t steer us wrong! This sports bar filled with all kinds of funky memorabilia is the perfect stop to refuel. On a Saturday afternoon – it was busy with locals watching football and friendly service!

5. “Big Boy”

Take a walk through the Cheyenne neighborhoods to Holiday Park and witness one of the original “Big Boy” steam engines. Even if you’re not a train enthusiast – it’s fascinating to see this huge engine that was used for pulling trains through the Rocky Mountains in the mid 1900’s.

I hope this glimpse into my day trip inspires you to explore your own area! If you happen to be in Wyoming… or a road trip on I-80, make a stop in Cheyenne!
