3 Tips for Visiting Grand Teton NP

Last September my husband and I road tripped to Wyoming for an autumn getaway – searching for fall colors, epic views, and wildlife sightings! After spending time in the spectacular Grand Teton National Park – these are 3 tips I recommend for your visit:

1. Driving Route

I highly suggest you purchase the Shaka Guide (including Yellowstone) for your time in Grand Teton NP. It’s the second time we’ve used this guide (our first experience with it was driving the Road to Hana on Maui) and besides finding it informative – it’s also highly entertaining

If you only have one day in the park (like we spent) – I suggest you drive the eastern “outer” loop first in the morning. Here you’ll find the best views (and usually more clear of clouds earlier in the day) of the Grand Tetons, Mormon Row (where the barn/mountain views are), and the Snake River access. The famous T.A. Moulton barn (the most photographed barn in the U.S.!) is next to the barn in my photo… I just liked this one better. 🙂

In the afternoon – drive the more western part of the loop and spend time at Jenny Lake. There are numerous opportunities for hiking and boating here.

2. Necessities

Make sure to take water and snacks along, as there are very limited facilities inside Grand Teton NP. After spending the morning in the park, Jackson is a nice place for a lunch break. After wandering/shopping in town, checking out the famous antler filled square – don’t miss lunch or a drink a the famous Millon Dollar Cowboy Bar

Also keep in mind there aren’t many restrooms in the park, as I didn’t see any on the scenic pullout areas. You’ll find facilities at the Visitor Center and Jenny Lake area.

Be bear aware… signs are posted all over the park! We didn’t take our bear spray on this trip – but wished we had, as most people had it on them.

3. When to Visit

If you’re looking to avoid peak season – I recommend going in September to avoid the crowds. We lucked out with less people, sunshine, and peak fall foliage during our visit during the end of September.

Be prepared for large crowds and lack of parking if you venture to the park during the high summer travel season.

Follow my tips and you’ll be sure to have a great time in Grand Teton National Park!
