Park Details
The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is located in El Paso County, Colorado. It’s near the small town of Calhan and about 40 minutes east of Colorado Springs and a 90 minute drive from the Denver area. The park includes 750 acres to explore, free parking, restrooms, and open daily from dawn until dusk. The park is full of geological formations; including sandstone capped spires and hoodoos that were created from millions of years of erosion. It got its name from the clay the Native Americans collected in this area; using pigment in the clay to create the paints for their ceramics, ceremonies, and decorations.
What to Do
Paint Mines is a unique area to hike, take photographs, and spot wildlife. There are about 4 miles of hiking trails through the park and I recommend the 3 mile loop. It winds through all the main areas to view the rocky formations and get your steps in! You’ll see signs as to which areas you’re allowed closer access. Within one of the larger areas of spires – there are some fun photo ops!
When to Visit
The Paint Mines is a year round destination, but keep in mind during the summer it can get extremely hot, with limited shade – so don’t forget your water bottle. Also be prepared for gusty winds in this area. We visited in early March and enjoyed a Colorado bluebird day! With cooler temps – winter can also be a unique time to visit if the hoodoos are covered in a blanket of snow!
