How to Spend a Summer Day in Vail Colorado

With only a mountain pass between Vail and where I live, it’s fun to pop over and play tourist on occasion! As most people know, Vail is a skiing and winter hotspot – but it’s also a terrific summer destination. One could easily spend days in this area, with so many activities. Vail is easy to access from either the east (Denver is a little less than 2 hours east) or west as it sits right off I-70. Take exit 176 off the interstate for the easiest way to Vail Village. Once you exit you’ll be on the south side of the highway entering a round-a-bout. If you go right (west) you’ll head toward Lionshead and if you go east you’ll go toward Vail Village parking (follow the signs and each parking lot is only a few blocks drive). Travel tip: parking is free in Vail during the summer! 🙂 Here are my suggestions for your perfect day – including bikes, brews, and views!

Your first stop is to rent a bike! There are bike shops in both the Lionshead and Vail Villages – so no matter which place you park it’ll be a quick walk. Once you’ve got your bikes, look for the Gore Valley Trail signs (you can’t miss them as they are on almost every corner) and start pedaling east. You’ll be biking through the village and this will take you into a neighborhood (you’re on a street through here) and on toward the golf course via bike path. The trail follows the river, takes you through beautiful aspen groves, and provides stunning views of the Gore Mountain Range! A nice ride is to East Vail and back to Vail Village… plan on an hour to two – depending on your breath at high altitude and how many photo stops you make! 😉

After dropping off the bike, your next stop is to quench your thirst at the Vail Brewing Company (located in Vail Village behind the winter ice rink). You won’t be disappointed with the locally brewed beer, atmosphere, and people watching (VBC doesn’t serve food – so plan…uh, drink accordingly! 😉 ).

When you’re done hanging out at the brewery (or maybe you choose to stay here! 🙂 ) up next is a walk in the villages. Enjoy the gorgeous summer flowers that adorn Vail in the summer, stroll along the creek, or do some shopping!

Lastly, end your day with a meal on one of the many terraces in Vail and soak up more of the views! There are numerous terrific restaurants in Vail, but when my husband needs a little taste of home – we go to Pepi’s Bar and Restaurant for a little European flavor. Get the schnitzel! 🙂

Colorado is beautiful year round – but it’s kicked up a notch during autumn! Click to read my TBK article “The Top 5 Reasons to Visit Colorado During Fall”.

Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
