1. Shore Excursions
River cruise lines have upped their game in the active tour department! Besides complimentary bikes to use on many ships – a few of the lines have partnered with adventure companies such as Backroads and National Geographic. On all the river cruises there are active excursions to choose from; such as guided hiking or biking tours. There are also cruises with entire themes centered around wellness and healthy lifestyles.
2. Wellness Programs/Water Sports
The latest feature on some of the new ships is a water sport platform. From the platform you can take out kayaks for a sightseeing and exercise combo! This area also allows use of stand up paddle boards, small boats and canoes. Most river cruise ships have swimming pools and top deck walking tracks for your daily workout. Some of the cruises offer designated exercise areas and daily instructor led fitness classes. You’ll have opportunities to participate in yoga, stretching, strength training and cardio sessions.
3. Take the Kids
Kids are naturally on the move, so you’ll most likely spend more time in the pool and taking part in active adventures! Many of the river cruise lines are family friendly and AmaWaterways partners with Adventures by Disney. On certain European sailings they cater the entire voyage to family centered activities. You and the kids can participate in scavenger hunts, sword fighting, learn a traditional dance or perfect your archery skills.
Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
