With the aspens at peak color in late September – it was a perfect time to explore more of Colorado and celebrate my first wedding anniversary a month early (my husband and I are still living with the Atlantic between us…but that’s another story!) in Steamboat Springs. After living in Colorado for over 20 years, this was my first visit to “Ski Town, U.S.A.” during the fall and it did not disappoint! Spectacular views, great restaurants, an abundance of activities, and friendly people make this a great warm or cold weather destination.
On Friday evening we happened to be here for the last “Sunset Happy Hour” of the season. The Steamboat Gondola took us up Thunderhead Mountain and for $12 it included the lift ticket and a drink. A great event with music, drinks, apps, and views worth more than the $12/per person! After the sunset we headed back down the mountain for dinner at the base. I highly suggest the Sheraton for dinner or drinks…just steps from the base of the gondola. It has a great outdoor patio with bar, fire pit, nice ambience, and views of the mountain!
Saturday was another gorgeous day that we spent hiking on Steamboat Mountain and exploring town. Since we were celebrating our anniversary it seemed fitting we saw an amazing wedding location being set up. And in true Colorado style – their dog was part of the wedding party! Main street Steamboat has a great selection of shops and restaurants, with a true western feel. I live less than 2 hours away but it feels more like “the west” in Steamboat with the locals truly dressing in the western style here. Some locals suggested we try Mahogany Ridge Brewery and Grill and I’m still talking about that steak (a good reminder when traveling – seek out the local recommendations)! And as promised in this blog…tasty locally brewed beers were sampled here. 🙂
That evening I also introduced my European husband to the American tradition of eating your year old frozen wedding cake on your first anniversary… in style with plastic utensils and paper cups for the champagne!
Travel by Kris tips for Steamboat:
- Steamboat is a scenic 3 hour drive from the Denver area or there’s also a regional airport with seasonal arrivals.
- There’s a free local bus (Steamboat Springs Transit) running daily between all the resorts, mountain, and downtown.
- It was too warm when I was here, but Steamboat Springs does have hot springs… as its name implies. Old Town Hot Springs on main street with full service spas/pools and also Strawberry Hot Springs outside of town – in a more rustic setting.
- Steamboat has a wide selection of resorts, hotels, condos, and B & B’s for all budgets and tastes. I can help you choose what’s a perfect fit for your needs!
