5 Things to See & Do in South Dakota

Last summer my husband and I ventured on a long weekend road trip from Colorado to visit one of the most popular summer vacation spots in the States! I hadn’t been to the Black Hills since I was a kid and this area was new to my Dutch hubby.

1. Custer State Park

It’s home to a herd of 1500 free roaming bison, so if you’re in search of wildlife this is a must drive! Unfortunately during our mid morning drive we only saw a few donkeys and a couple lone bison (lucky for us, being from Colorado we see bison often). But, to see more of the herd I recommend driving this 18 mile loop more toward evening when the animals are most active. In September you can attend the annual roundup of the bison!

2.  Peter Norbec Scenic Highway

Be sure to drive this road to take in the beautiful scenery, watch for wildlife, experience the hairpin curves, and go through the single lane tunnels! I suggest driving this at dusk… as we had the road almost to ourselves (and it was late June, so it was peak summer travel season there!). We were able to stop for photos without worrying about cars backing up! Use caution at this time of evening, as we saw many many deer out near the road enjoying the cooler temps. Also, don’t miss all the views of Mt. Rushmore through the tunnels!

3.  Mt. Rushmore

Don’t miss one of the most famous national monuments in the U.S. Yes, during the summer it’s hot and crowded… but seeing some of our most important Presidents etched in stone is still an impressive sight! To get even closer and access different views, take the Presidential Trail. You know how some sights we see as kids loom larger than life… I have to admit, Mt. Rushmore was just as impressive as an adult!

4.  Deadwood

For a wild west feeling, make a stop in Deadwood. It’s fun to wander their historic main street and envision life when Wild Bill Hickok was alive! It’s a great home base if you love outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking or mountain biking. If you’re a gambler – Deadwood has plenty of casino options. And, for you bikers – there’s a Harley shop on main street to get your Sturgis gear.

5.  Badlands/Wall Drug

If you’re not from the midwest, this may be a national park that’s not top on your list of parks to visit… but it really is a very unique landscape! If you’re vacationing in the Black Hills, it’s an hour drive to the Badlands. If you can go at sunrise or sunset you’ll be amazed at the colors in the rock formations (great for pictures!). During your drive to the Badlands you can’t miss all the signs for visiting Wall Drug. After all the hype, we couldn’t miss this attraction! My memory as visiting as a child included a mile long walk from the parking lot… I hate to disappoint but it was actually less than a block. 😉 If you enjoy history, unique gifts, an old fashioned candy shop, and a jackalope you can ride – then this is a place for you.

Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
