Before our recent Greek Isles cruise departing from Athens – my husband and I spent the day here. As this was each of our second visits to this city – we didn’t stay longer this trip. Even if you only have 24 hours – there’s still much to experience in this ancient city!
Make sure you pre book your entrance ticket or tour, as this will save you a ton of time in line. It’s one of the most popular sites in Athens and is very very busy during peak season. If you’re traveling during the hot summer months I also suggest you visit in the morning before the stifling heat of the afternoon! We didn’t tour the Acropolis this trip as we had done this previously – but I highly recommend it!
Don’t miss a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Plaka neighborhood! Sitting at the base of the Acropolis – it’s the perfect spot to grab a Greek beer (Mythos!) after your morning tour. This area of Athens has a village like feel to it and with all the cute stores it’s a great place to shop for souvenirs and gifts.
With an abundance of restaurant choices – I recommend staying in the Plaka for dinner. Wandering this area – my husband and I stumbled across Tabepna and enjoyed one of the most memorable meals of our vacation! We loved the ambience (small tables in the alley), fantastic service and tasting the Greek wine from their vineyard.
There are numerous spots to enjoy the sun setting on Athens – we spent the end of the day at the trendy NEW Art Lounge rooftop bar. The 360 degree views can be enjoyed al fresco or from inside their comfy lounge area. A short walk from Syntagma Square (and the Plaka) my husband and I also stayed right below the rooftop bar at the NEW Hotel (a review to come later).
One of the oldest cities in the world and rich with history (with the friendliest locals!) – don’t forget to include Athens in your Greece adventure!
Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
