Global Entry vs TSA PreCheck

It’s a subject of much confusion on if you need Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Hope this information clears up which is the best option for how you travel.

TSA PreCheck

In a nutshell – TSA Pre is the best choice if you mainly travel domestically within the U.S. It’s available at approximately 200 airports and about 90 airlines participate.

Compared to Global Entry – it’s the easier and quicker application process. After completing the application – you’ll visit an enrollment center, (appointment needed), pay the $85 fee (it’s good for 5 years), and provide fingerprints/photo. You’ll receive your Known Traveler Number anywhere from 3 – 60 days after your appointment.

Once you have your KTN (Known Traveler Number) you’ll add to your airline reservations and it’ll appear on your boarding pass. Some of the perks of traveling with a KTN are: shorter lines at airport, no removal of jackets, liquids, or shoes at the airport, and your children 12 and under can accompany you without their own KTN number (this needs to be on their boarding pass).

Global Entry

If you’re a more frequent international traveler – Global Entry is the better option for you (it also includes TSA PreCheck). It’s part of the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) program which allows quicker re-entry into the U.S. It enables you to skip the lines and matches your face or documents at the kiosks. You won’t have to do the forms the flight attendants hand out at the end of your international flight returning home to the U.S.. It also allows easy entry into countries that have the Global Entry kiosk.

The application process for Global Entry includes an online application, that requires pre approval before making an in person appointment. Depending on your location – be prepared to wait weeks for an appointment time. For the interview you’ll need your passport, approval letter, and proof of residency (such as driver’s license). There will be an interview and background check. Some airports allow an EoA (enrollment on arrival) if you have a pre approval letter from the online application. If you already have an international trip planned, this is a good choice in less waiting time for an interview. Check your arrival airport if they offer this when arriving from outside the U.S.

Global Entry is $120 for 5 years and also includes TSA PreCheck. After your interview – it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months to receive approval.

Global Entry becomes a Pass ID (that can be added to your frequent flier profiles or when you book flights), along with your 9 digit KTN.

Pro Tip: Some credit cards come with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck perks, in the form of a credit for the application.
