Kusadasi is a popular port stop on Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Departing Athens last fall, this was the first place my husband and I visited on our 19 day cruise through the Middle East. These are 3 things I recommend to experience in Kusadasi.
1. Ephesus
The UNESCO world heritage site of Ephesus is the show stopper and a must see on your day in Kusadasi. You’ll be mesmerized by the history and architecture as you explore the streets of this ancient Greco-Roman city. Depending on your interests – there are numerous tours to choose from for your visit to Ephesus. About 30 minutes from port – it’s an easy tour distance from your ship.
2. Sirince
About 10-15 minutes from Ephesus, the picturesque village of Sirince is a lovely place to visit. Surrounded by olive trees… and reminiscent of Tuscany – my husband and I enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets and sampling the local fruit wines. I highly recommend a tour including both Ephesus and Sirince!
3. Harbor Area
I suggest taking a walk in the harbor area of Kusadasi, as it’s a short distance from where the ship is docked. It’s a great spot for people watching, shopping and a taste of local food! My husband and I had a late lunch at La Terrazzo in the marina area and it ended up being one of our favorite meals of the trip. They also treated us to Turkish tea to top off our experience. The food was excellent, the staff was so friendly and we enjoyed the seaside views!
The history of Ephesus, beauty of Sirince, friendly people and sampling local food – made this a most memorable day!
Until the next adventure – bon voyage!
